Robinson’s Challenge
Robinson’s Unicorn
Brewery of Stockport seeks the Inn Sign Society’s help to provide
information related to the names of their pubs.
Members are
invited to contribute relevant information which will be included
on the company’s soon-to-be revamped website.
Although we are
keen to enlist the help of ISS members living in the area, others
(visitors to the Lake District for example) may have knowledge
that may useful.
Robinson’s estate
of 364 pubs is located in the north-west of England and also north
Wales. The north-west area mainly includes: Cheshire, Cumbria,
Derbyshire, Lancashire and Greater Manchester. Robinson’s pubs in
the Principality are located in Anglesey, Clwyd and Gwynedd.

the ISS reference number (LH column) with any information
regarding each specific entry.
-
Limit your
response to not more than 50 words per entry.
-
Mention the
most important information first.
Names such as
Kings Head or similar are best avoided unless you have
photographic evidence of the monarch portrayed!
Please send your
findings as soon as possible to the Publicity Officer preferably
by email or by post to 34a Chawn Hill, Stourbridge DY9 7JB
You may ask why
the company needs our help. As a result of takeovers (e.g.
Hartleys) details and records of information about pub names may
have been lost.
The Inn Sign
Society should feel very proud to be invited to participate in
this challenge. It may be taken as recognition of the high regard
that the Society is held and its acknowledged status as the
leading authority regarding the meanings of inn signs and pub
names.
Aims & Objectives
The aims and objectives of the Society are:
- To bring together those with a
general interest in the Inn Sign in general and provide a means
of exchanging information about, and encouraging research into,
the Inn Sign in all its many facets.
- To make a record of as many
signs as possible
- To research the origins of the
many names given to inns
- To establish archives, both
written and pictorial, accessible to all members.
- To record the sign artists,
their sources and their material.
