The Fair And Firkin

The Fair And Firkin - Nottingham

This convivial sign relates to Nottingham's annual Goose Fair which was first mentioned in a Royal Charter granted to the town by King Edward I in 1284. In its earliest form it was a huge market at which patrons could purchase all manner of things, but in particular geese. These birds had often been bred in Norfolk and herded to Nottingham where they were sold at the fair.
