The Cuckoo Bush

The Cuckoo Bush - Gotham, Nottinghamshire

The name here is a reference to the antics of the 'Wise Men of Gotham' who feigned madness to avoid paying taxes to King John in the 13th century. When they learned of his imminent visit to their village one of their mad antics was to begin building a fence around a tree in which a cuckoo had chosen to roost. When asked by the king's men what they were about, they explained that they were keeping the bird trapped in the tree so that it would remain eternally spring in Gotham.
