The Greyhound

The Greyhound - Diss, Norfolk

The 'Greyhound' has been used as an inn sign since the Tudor period. Until the late 18th century a silver greyhound was worn on the sleeve of the King's Messengers who, when carrying royal and state mail, would use it as a means of recognition. In the days of coaching, this led to several public houses taking up the name. Interestingly, due to its reliance more on sight than smell, the greyhound dog is often referred to as the 'gazehound.' Originally used in the chase, these canines are now used mainly for greyhound racing or 'greycing.'
