Never Turn Back

Never Turn Back, Caistor, Norfolk

The sign here is a tribute to the local lifeboatmen who risk their lives to save others at sea. In 1901 the Caister lifeboat was launched during a severe storm to help a ship in distress. Sadly, the lifeboat itself ran into trouble and capsized, with the loss of many of its crew. Asked why the lifeboat had continued towards the ship it was trying to help in such perilous conditions, James Haylett the coxswain of the vessel replied, "Caister men never turn back, sir!"
