Inns and their signs

Inn signs and pub names are seen daily by almost everyone, and have immense interest.

How were the names derived?
What are their stories? Who were the people the signs portray?
What do the odd names mean?

Some, such as Salutation or Seven Stars, record the early origins of inns as hostels for pilgrims.

Some recall battles, maybe half or long-forgotten today, for example, Sebastopol.

Some such as Beetle & Wedge, are linked with
local trades.

The Inn Sign Society is the acknowledged authority on inn signs and pub names all over the country.

We hope you enjoy your visit
to our website!

Robinson’s Challenge

Robinson’s Unicorn Brewery of Stockport seeks the Inn Sign Society’s help to provide information related to the names of their pubs.

Members are invited to contribute relevant information which will be included on the company’s soon-to-be revamped website.

Although we are keen to enlist the help of ISS members living in the area, others (visitors to the Lake District for example) may have knowledge that may useful.

Robinson’s estate of 364 pubs is located in the north-west of England and also north Wales. The north-west area mainly includes: Cheshire, Cumbria, Derbyshire, Lancashire and Greater Manchester. Robinson’s pubs in the Principality are located in Anglesey, Clwyd and Gwynedd.

Thus far, four members have agreed to contribute!
A representative from Wales is particularly wanted!

Auction Announcement

Five photographic albums of inn sign prints have been duly recorded in the archives and are no longer required. It is proposed to auction the albums (by county) at the AGM.

If any members have unwanted albums, books, collections (please do not submit inferior quality items) that they wish to include in the auction, please email the Publicity Officer for further details.

A list of lots for the AGM sale will be included in the next journal (postal bids will be accepted).

 List of Ansell's Pubs Wanted

Member John French has set himself the task of creating a register of Midlands pubs - by brewery! Being a very organised sort of person, John has decided to start at the beginning with the letter 'A'.

Consequently he is on the lookout for a list of Ansell's pubs! Any date will do as a starting point. If anyone can provide John with information - or any other lists of pubs of other Midland breweries, please email him at:
