ISS Sign of the Year Award - 2013
Each year, the Inn Sign Society presents the Sign of the Year award


Entries are invited subject to the following conditions:

Signs must relate to pubs trading at the time of nomination

In addition, each entry must satisfy at least two of the following criteria:

  • Exceptional in appeal and / or aesthetically pleasing to the eye
  • Sign illustrates a new 'take' on an old name
  • Portrays local distinctiveness (significance in local heritage)
  • Reflects a company's change in pub sign policy
  • Has a decorative frame - wood, wrought iron etc - try to include in photo
  • Sign is clean and not badly weathered

Closing date for receipt of nominations is the first Friday of October each year.

There is no limit to the number of signs you may submit, but we reserve the right to restrict and / or reject entries in order to preserve the integrity of the Award.

Please note that signs adorned by flags, streamers, for sale signs, Christmas lights etc will not be considered.

Images (preferably jpeg format) must be accompanied by details of the sign's location, date photograph was taken and the photographer's contact details.

The Inn Sign Society welcomes entries from all persons - members and non-members.
Sorry, no prizes are offered!

The judges' decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

The Black Horse

Iver Heath, Bucks
The sign pays tribute to the late Syd James, star of 19 'Carry-on' movies,
which were made at Pinewood Studios located nearby.
The studios are equally famous for being the home of numerous James Bond films.
The sign was painted by ISS member Rob Rowland and nominated by Peter Gorman,
who received the sign on the artist's behalf.
